A troubling irony is unfolding across the Unted States: groups that once labeled pregnancy help centers as “fake clinics” are now launching their own “pro-choice pregnancy centers.” These new centers mimic the familiar offerings—pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, parenting classes, baby supplies—yet they operate under a radically different mission.
A recent Mother Jones article highlights one such example in Arkansas, where an abortion-support organization has opened what it calls a “pro-choice pregnancy center.” Others in Indiana and Ohio have similar models.
The hypocrisy is stark.
For years, critics accused life-affirming centers of deception, even vilifying them as “fake.” Now, some of those same critics are copying the model—coating anti-abortion messaging in pro-choice rhetoric. This is more than rhetorical gymnastics; it is a strategic blurring of lines.

Scope & reach
In 2022, approximately 2,750 U.S. pregnancy centers delivered more than 3.2 million client sessions, serving nearly 800,000 individuals with material assistance worth $367 million—including diapers, cribs, strollers, and formula. A more recent 2024 snapshot from Heartbeat International reported more than 2 million client visits to its affiliated centers.
Services provided
Pregnancy help services commonly include ultrasounds (offered by 76% of Heartbeat affiliates), educational and parenting support, and even Abortion Pill Reversal programs—part of a life-saving resource network.
Client impact
In 2022, these centers helped avert an estimated 828,000 abortions, according to federal reporting. Client satisfaction remains extraordinarily high—97.4% reported a positive experience. In one example, Hope Choice in Amarillo, Texas, has over 6,000 client interactions already in 2025, with 465 out of 468 abortion-minded women choosing life after visiting.
Volunteer & staff support
Nearly 45,000 volunteers and more than 10,000 medical staff and volunteers contributed their time and skills in pregnancy help centers in 2024.
These numbers reveal a simple truth: the pregnancy help model works. It is so compelling that opposing ideologies feel compelled to emulate it under a different brand.
But this imitation risks breeding confusion and potential diversion of vital resources. Some of these centers may be mistaken for life-affirming pregnancy help—not only in style, but in eligibility for state funding. This makes urgent the need for clarity in messaging and mission.
How should pregnancy help organizations respond?
- Show the real impact. Share concrete stats: millions of client visits, hundreds of thousands served, high satisfaction, lives saved, volunteers mobilized. These are not abstract concepts—they are real lives being transformed!
- Stand on ethical excellence. Continue to commit to honesty, compassion, and professional standards (as with the Commitment of Care and Competence). That is what distinguishes real pregnancy help from deceptive lookalikes.
- Share the stories. Personal testimonies—women whose lives were changed, families supported, babies welcomed—resonate more than slogans ever could. Make the mission human.
The rise of “pro-choice pregnancy centers” is both challenging and flattering. It underscores how effective—and how needed—the true pregnancy help movement is. As imitators pop up, our response must be clear: unwavering service, proven impact, and relentless compassion.
