The pro-abortion claim that doctors are leaving pro-life states is a lie

Ever since the 2022 overturn of Roe v. Wade with the Supreme Court Dobbs decision and pro-life states subsequently acting to protect women through abortion regulation a decidedly pro-abortion media has fixated on creating the narrative of a purported hardship on women and OB-GYNs, the latter supposedly fleeing these life states for more permissive abortion destinations.

To listen to the abortion-affirming media, you'd think there wasn't an OB-GYN left in any life state.

Some have even claimed pro-life laws are making the U.S. dangerous.

Witness sensational headlines like this from a November 2024 article from The New Yorker“The Texas OB/GYN Exodus.”

The article’s sub-headline read, "Amid increasingly stringent abortion laws, doctors who provide maternal care have been fleeing the state.”

And “others were contemplating early retirement," the article claimed.

In its April 2023 article, “The Fallout of Dobbs on the Field of OB/GYN,” the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) said many OB-GYNS and others considering the specialty say the Dobbs ruling “has interfered in the physician-provider relationship, undercut their ability to provide evidence-based care, and put them in legal peril.”

The AAMC article said experts were concerned these feelings may prompt OB-GYNs “to move or leave the field entirely.”

In October 2024 an article from The Texas Tribune said a study had shown  “Texas’ abortion laws are straining the OB-GYN workforce,” while its sub-headline said, “More doctors are considering leaving or retiring early, while fewer medical students are applying to obstetrics and gynecology residencies in Texas.”

A more recent study from April of this year from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) conceded the reality that OB-GYNs weren’t leaving life states nor were their numbers in these states even stagnating.

In fact, the JAMA study found that the number of OB-GYNs in states where abortion was “banned” or “threatened” increased more than they did in states that protect abortion.

From before to after Dobbs, the number of OB-GYNs increased by:

  • 3% in states where abortion is banned
  • 5% in states where abortion is threatened
  • 7% in states where abortion is protected

Students for Life of America Kristan Hawkins pointed out the absurdity of media claims that physicians would flee states with pro-life protections in a recent episode of her YouTube program.

"Let’s be real: Those reports NEVER made sense,” she said. “Why on earth would someone enter a profession designed to save people’s lives and then be mad and leave because they can’t kill their own patients?”

The JAMA study isn't the only contradiction to the media scare effort following the Dobbs ruling.

An August 2024 Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) study titled, “Dobbs and Medical Deserts: Will Pro-Life Laws Drive Away Doctors and Lead to Hospital Closures?” found that claims that pro-life laws are contributing to hospital closures and driving doctors away “are unjustified,” and that “pro-life states continue to train medical students, recruit future doctors, and position themselves for further growth.”

“Pro-life states are still receiving many times more applications than they have spots available,” the CLI study executive summary said, and “a review of press releases and media coverage around recent hospital closures shows that the hospitals shut down due to factors like financial problems and declining patient volumes, not abortion policy.”

That full study is available HERE.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Tweet This: OB-GYNs are not leaving life states as abortion supporters claim.

And speaking as someone who serves women through pregnancy help, I will say that we have been too busy helping moms in unplanned pregnancies with ultrasounds, counseling, maternity and baby materials, adoption assistance, and more to respond to every ridiculous pro-abortion claim about a horrible America brought about by allowing states the right to make their own abortion laws.

Really, if abortion apologists were honest they’d acknowledge that the only negative outcome of overturning Roe v. Wade for them is that Planned Parenthood and other abortionists have to work a little harder to peddle their disgusting business.
